I decided the other day to try to build a website. One based on a business model of course. It will be a social network with instant messaging and video capabilities. Anyway, I’ve been inquiring around as to the costs of designing a website like this and was told somewhere in the five figure range. My budget and those numbers didn’t seem to meet up. The street I was walking down was really low budget, definitely not uptown. I want this to be something on par with any of the major social network sites, slick and robust, speedy database with various user-inputed queries. Since my budget isn’t inline with this type of reality I decided to learn how to design and build my own site. I have already picked up two books on the subject. Sam’s Teach yourself HTML and XHTML along with Sam’s teach yourself ASP.NET 2.0. If anyone has any other books they could recommend I would appreciate it. Understand, I dont know if ASP.NET would be ideal or not, I got it because it was the only one I had heard of that I remembered when I was looking. Also, ASP.NET works on windows, oh well you can figure out the rest, I use windows.

So, if you know of or could recommend something that deals with databases that would fit into the scope of this project don’t hesitate to let me know. I also saw a person on craigslist that was offering lessons on web design for about 15 or 20 bucks an hour. Seems reasonable I may look into that also. I’m trying to figure out how I’d decide if the person is worth the expense, cant really lose too much if I try him/her for an hour though. I may try them this weekend if I can reach them between now and then.

I have never designed or hosted a site before. I’m only familiar with the end usage. I’m going to attempt to document my thoughts and intentions at the bare minimum daily. Hopefully more. I do have a day job, I am a real estate agent and a personal trainer, I guess this will be my graveyard shift job then.

If anyone has any input as to how I should go about doing any of this your input would be gladly appreciated. If not just hang on for the ride it should be adventurous.

I find your site intriguing. Your project has some very interesting challenges. You should receive plenty of input on this type of endeavor. I look forward to watching you advance your project. Good luck.
