So, now I learn PHP

October 6th, 2007 · 1 Comment

I am now finding out that I will need to learn PHP for the database. I was under the assumption that ASP.NET would do the same thing, could I be wrong? Anyway, it never hurts to learn one more thing so PHP is my next mountain to climb. I tried to look for the person who was advertising in craigslist about the web development tutoring, can’t find it any more though. Guess he/she realized that they were under cutting the market with $15 per hour. Maybe they’ll come back in a week or so and up the numbers to $30. Capitalism gotta love it. I found a site called Hotscripts they offer links to various pre packaged local server installation learning and building kits. They’re free so it meets my budgetary constraints. I dont know which one to go with though. They have two that have gotten the most reviews. There is the Apache2Triad and the Apache friends Xampp both bundles have the same amount of reviews so its a toss up I guess. If anyone knows anything that would distinguish one over the other please let me know.

My kids are telling me I have been spending an inordinate amount of time in front of the computer lately. I tell them I’m doing all of this for them and hope they understand it. I remember as a child my mother insisted computers were the wave of the future so in between working she went to a school to learn fortran and cobol so she could teach it to my siblings and I. I’m the only one who took a liking to it though. A funny side thought when when my mom took the classes I went a couple times with her, what was weird was there were more woman taking the class then men.  Now there seems to be more men then women.  Always thought that was odd.

Anyway, I guess what I’m saying is this is my school and I can only hope I can translate the knowledge I learn to them too. Course my oldest is 7, but hey you can try right?

I will maybe do a partition on my computer and install both and hope I can quickly figure out which one is better suited for me and then blow the other partition off so i can focus on the preferred bundle. I have been reading many more interesting articles that I will be showing you guys also when I get the chance. The web is a fascinating library. We’ve come along way.

I can relate to the kids complaining about you being on the computer alot. I may not understand the rest of the things you are talking about but I do get the kids. Mine have me on a weekly allowance now. If I go over I pay for it. If I were a kid I would have probably done the same.
