Is nothing sacred?

I saw an interesting article about a startup that google is backing called 23 and Me at first it seemed like a great concept.

Until I read there privacy statement.  Funny thing I believe is that most people don’t read things like TOS or privacy statements.  This information Im giving you is just on a quick glance.  Just enough to make me decide I didn’t want to do this.  I mean I like google and all, but what does this mean??

”We may use Genetic and Phenotypic Information to conduct 23andMe-authorized scientific research and development. Any Phenotypic Information you provide is done on a voluntary basis. We may provide third party organizations access to this information for scientific research, but without your name or any other Account Information. ”

Im curious about my genetic makeup.  Dont know if I want to have it compilied and displayed for the world though.  Someone eventually has to hold the info, dont think I’d want it to be a google entity.

Really dont know if I want it to be the government either, but its better than private industry.

They say that your Phenotypic results once you agree to wanting to see them  can/will be subject to 23 and Me authorized research.  You must elect to do their questionnaire and surveys to get it.

Phenotypic Information - Phenotypic Information is personal information that includes disease conditions (e.g., Type 2 Diabetes), other health information (e.g., pulse rate, cholesterol levels, visual acuity) personal traits (e.g., eye color, height), ethnicity, and family history (e.g., similar information about family members). We obtain this information from you on a voluntary basis when you choose to participate in 23andMe-authorized research by answering our surveys and/or questionnaires

Hmmm.

Thats where my issues comes from.

I’m assuming like me thats what you’d be purchasing the test to find out.

Once we conclude what googles purpose is which is to share information with the world; lets think scanning the worlds books and displaying them without approval.

Let us remember publishers and authors had to opt out of having their works scanned not opt in.

My question is what will we have to opt out of if we use this service?

Don’t be evil
